Abandoned

You know where all those Crab pots are at Gibson Cove? These ones are particularly pretty. Tied nicely, new fittings, neatly coiled rope and bright buoys....Anyway, ever been in the old cannery behind the tall stacks?

(Abby, Let me tell you about crab pots and one epic night someday.)

The first question that comes to mind is: Why? With property so valuable, why is this place just sitting here?  Why was it neglected to the point of no return? This office space is salvageable, but many parts seem rather precarious, with their partially collapsed roof and black mold. Scattered around are plaques, receipts, and records from the early 1990s to about 2001 (account #s, names and all). As you can see with the gloves, nails, and water bottle, someone has been in here sometime recently.

The second question that comes to mind: Why does the City pay the electricity for the Ocean Beauty (I think) owned dilapidated and neglected property? Why are the lights always on?  It is used for storage of hundreds of thousands of dollars of boat gear (I swear the entire Miss Gina is in there).
*UPDATE: It is owned by the city of Kodiak. Why do they own it and why are they neglecting it if they took it on?

Time has literally stood still it seems...

It can be a bit creepy in the labyrinth-like facility.  It's an amalgamation of joined buildings with LOTS of little spaces leading to big ones. Series of ladders and little doors lead to suddenly open lofts. It's a captivating place.

I seem to have taken lots of wide views, but I did not capture the muddled maze of hallways, walkways, and ladders.

Sun sets late. This was 10:30pm. The light pretty much outlasts me these days!

Anton take 2

Who could get sick of this view???! Bruce and Midge have an amazing spot on this Earth. I am so grateful I got to spend a few days there.

I tired to help plant and do chores, but Bruce is used to doing everything by himself.

We got some lettuce planted.

I definitely felt happy and content while there. It was a great time. Good company, banya, yummy food, surrounded by unspoiled beauty, what else could I ask for?!

 Little temporary spot of heaven.

All Timmy and I want is a place to call our own - a little cabin in the woods (in Kodiak). We will never have it. Why you ask? Kodiak is extremely expensive with very limited resources. There is an incredible lack of opportunity for professional development, and when opportunities arise, despite the fact I have an education and an abundance of experience, well, they seemingly are not available to me for what reason I know not.

We don't have enough money as is, aka $60-80,000 on hand to buy land (if there is any available. btw, rent in Kodiak is $1500-1800 a month and houses are over $300,000 with one or two around $200,000), so....Guess I'll go by the wayside.  I feel bad mostly for Abby. She will watch me struggle like I watch my mom, and she will be able to do nothing about it, like I can do nothing. (I can't even provide health insurance for Abby.  I have no retirement, no possessions of any value, I am not complaining, I am painting a picture of reality. The one thing I do have is LOVE, which is far more valuable than any monetary thing. However, a little cabin in the woods is a DREAM, and having it unattainable seems to be choking the life out of us.)

Morning ice.

It was a fabulous experience, and I will keep it dear to my heart.

NOT photoshopped! G-R-E-E-N!

Got back to town and everything was of course back to the same ol' $%^^%#&%$@!!!

Me trying to chop wood!

Anton's

I was fortunate enough to go out to Anton Larsen Bay to Bruce and Midge's place.

 KJ and glove rack

Brian in the room that has running water from a shallow well that is sand filtered.

Love this! Always wanted a wood burning stove like this.
