Pie

Over the weekend I made a cherry pie for the first time on my own without mom. I am a fourth generation pie maker, receiving numerous awards for pie crust! As a friend said, "this is good, it's the crust that makes the pie." Specialties include pumpkin, cherry, and sugar. I hope Abby learns too and becomes a fifth generation pie maker!

Marnie, My mother always wanted me to watch her make the pie crust, from the time I was about 3, but she never let me help, even as a teenager. When I left home at 21, and I wanted to make a pie for the first time, I was afraid I couldn't do it, but from watching her all those years, it turned out perfect the first time! Just like you. When you were young, you watched sometimes, but I wanted you to do it on your own, and when a teenager, you were not interested. But before you left for Kodiak, we made one together. I KNEW you could do it. It came from your great-great grandmother Graham, to your Great grandmother Tolle, to your Grandma Miller to me, and now to you, and then to Abby. My mother made Cherry, black raspberry (they were plentiful once!)and pumpkin, also Lemon meringue and Chocolate meringue. Your Grandmother Leist made sugar pie. She learned from her mother, your great grandmother Yaple. Your grandmother would always be so excited to do the pie, she smiled and made this cure gesture with her hands, and crinkled her nose in happiness. She taught me-she had no recipe- only knew from the "look of the pie". Hers is very thin- others make a thick one, but I think hers is the best. You ARE a renaissance woman- you can keep track of a rare collection of Alutiiq objects, teach, work on restoring a boat (including "corking" (caulking), write, and be a great mom, and----bake a perfect pie with a perfect crust!
