PITBULL

Wally Mart had some contest that whatever store got the most likes on FB, then Pitbull would go there.  They probably didn't plan on it being in Kodiak!  Apparently someone thought it would be funny to send him someplace remote - that would be us!

I was not planning on going, but I was invited by Rickhart to photograph the Alutiiq Dancers. Seemed like fun, so I went.

Professional crews there to document the publicity event.

This chick is CLEARLY not from Kodiak! How did she get her lips so pink? All black with hot pink lips I could not pull off, but she definitely has the features for it! Awesome.

The kids were having a good time!

Samoan dancers
Basically the event included local performers and Pitbull just being here to smile and joke a lot. He then went to Wally Mart to meet employees or something.

Pitbull got the key to the city!  I was impressed with how well Pat Branson did. She and Pitbull had quite the flirty rapport.

He also got a pair of fake XtraTuffs...

became a honorary Wally Mart employee...

held babies! and much more. Then he was gone!

Dumpumentary

 Man in black strikes again.
Dump and cover - do you remember that song for protecting oneself from a nuclear axplosion - Duck and Cover?  In this case, it Dump and Cover. I can't believe this is our Borough's management of waste.  Crush and cover with gravel.  Not only is land at a super premium, and this method involves lots of it, but the gravel itself is worth a fortune.  So lets use scarce resources for our trash instead of, oh I don't know, recycling or having an incinerator!

Old fishing gear

Old refrigerators and construction waste...

Why there is so much good stuff to use in there!

Herman's Angels

Oh Herman's smoked salmon!!! SO goooooood. Seriously a woman could marry that man for the salmon!

 Herman's Store, aka pantry. Awesome!

 Smokin' salmon

 Smokehouse, banya, shed

Collection of beach debris. It's amazing what washes up, and disgusting.

Jill, Dani, and I went to Ouzinkie to interview Herman.  He knows how to process a vast array of traditional foods and is willing to share his knowledge.  He picked us up in his skiff and took us over there for the day.

Jill writing down one of Herman's recipes.

Dani fell in love with Kilo the dog.

Lil Kodiak humor.  On Near Is. someone is sticking eyes on cut branches to create facial expressions.

 Oh bella Kodiak.

 Me outside the "thinktank".

Everything else in green!

Who's that girl?

I'm like the "Where's Waldo" of Kodiak.
I'm up to 4 or 5 background appearances and 2 full front page photos.

4th

Harbormaster building with octopus sculpture made of marine debris (beach trash)

Pushki (Abby's black cat with green eyes) got to go to the parade too.

Oh small town parade! It lasts about 5 minutes. If you walk over to Center right afterwards, you can see it again, so it lasts 15 minutes.

Abby knows mom's favorite flower is orange poppies!

We have Lou this week and he requires lots of running. Doesn't he look so happy tearing through the wildflowers?

Beach party!  Abby was reaching up...to grab the fireworks?

Beach glass, deer leg

Last week Abby and I went to a specific beach to harvest some beach glass for her godmother. The 1964 tidal wave reportedly washed out a dump and there are a few beaches that have tons of beach glass.  They look like white, brown, varying shades of green, and blue jelly beans.

Rare piece of blue beach glass

Abby ran and picked something up saying, "Mommy, what is this?" I responded "You can put that down. That is a deer leg. It was leftover from a bear's dinner."
